The lineout is one method to restart play after the ball has gone out of bounds for “touch”. The team that did not cause the touch is awarded the ball. The two teams form a tunnel. The number of players in the tunnel is set by the team with the ball. |
| The forwards (the same players who form the scrum) are the main players in the lineout. One player, usually the hooker, throws the ball down the middle of the tunnel. Meanwhile, the jumper, supported by the props for extra lift, times the jump to catch the ball and feed it to the backline. |

To mix things up and take advantage of the control of the ball, the jumping team will attempt to confuse their opponents. They may have two jumpers, they may throw the ball short or long. The ball must be thrown down the middle of the tunnel, but either team may contest for the ball. In any event, the player who catches the ball will feed it to the backline and play continues. |
