Soccer Players

The game of soccer provides that two teams are on the field, switching back and forth between offense and defense.

In general, teams line up their players with three forwards, three midfielders, four defensemen and one goalkeeper.
Forwards, which consist of the center striker and two wings, provide the team’s primary offense and score goals.Their objective is to advance the ball from midfield toward the opposing goal by dribbling, passing, and shooting.
Midfielders, also called halfbacks, play between the forwards and the defenders. They play both offense and defense. Their goal is to receive the ball when it’s “cleared” by teammates in the defensive zone. Then they pass it up to the forwards to try to score.
The defense, which consists of the fullbacks and sweeper, line up between the midfielders and their team’s own goal. They form a row of three fullbacks with the sweeper behind them to catch balls to provide a trap before the ball can get to the goalie. They also clear the ball up to the midfielders.
The goalkeeper stands in front of the goal to block shots by opposing players. This is the only player on the field permitted to touch the ball with her hands but only inside the 18-yard penalty area surrounding the goal.
